Overview
VIP students will work on tasks that contribute to either the HSRN projects or Corelink on our GitLab repositories. Each student will be assigned to a team of 3-5 students, along with a mentor from the HSRN research group. Students’ work will be tracked through milestones and issues, and they will participate in weekly stand-up meetings with their team. Students will present their work on the demo day. By the end of the semester, students will have gained experience by working on a real-world software project and will have a better understanding of the software development process.
Roles and Responsibilities
We employ stratifications to run our VIP program. Specifically, there are three different kinds of roles:
-
Mentors are more of an advisory role, helping with guidance for the team and less hands-on technical work.
-
Team Leads are the main member responsible for deliverables and handling ticket management for their team.
-
Team members are general members who contribute to the project and support VIP events and operations.
Enrollment Options
The VIP offers 4 different combinations of academic standing + credits:
- Undergraduate with variable (1-3) credits (VIP-UY 300X)
- Undergraduate with 0 credits (VIP-UY 3000)
- Graduate with 1.5 credits (VIP-GY 5001)
- Graduate with 0 credits (VIP-GY 5000)
New VIP students are by default enrolled with 1 credit (VIP-UY 300X) for undergraduate or 1.5 credits for graduate (VIP-GY 5001). Undergraduates who grow into positions of leadership, management, and specialization may enroll in more than 1 credit.
Per VIP Enrollment Restrictions, make sure you only enroll in one VIP team at a time (i.e., you can only enroll in the HSRN VIP team if you want to join).
Commitment
We expect 1 credit/1.5 credit students to dedicate 6 to 10 hours of commitment per week to the program during the semester, with more as credits increase (either through VIP or internship courses). For 0-credit students, your level of commitment should mirror that of those students. If you cannot achieve the required level of commitment for any reason, this program may not be a fit for you. While VIP program guidelines suggest consecutive enrollment, the decision is ultimately mutual, meaning a return credit offer is not guaranteed and will be evaluated based on your performance over the semester. The same goes for students; we can not and will not force students to return if they do not plan to. We understand that circumstances might change, but we hope you enjoy your time with us and keep this in mind for your future planning.
Grading
You will be evaluated by your teammates, team lead, as well as your mentor in Midterm and Final Evaluations. Students enrolled in a zero-credit VIP course will receive a Pass (P) for 80% or higher. Unexpected absences from Kickoff or Demo day and incomplete mid-semester and end-of-semester evaluation forms will result in an incomplete grade.
